On May 5, 2021, the Department of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences received the 2020 Department/Office/Unit Diversity Excellence Award. This award “Recognizes an office, department or unit that has demonstrated a commitment to building a workplace and learning space that is inclusive of difference and values various aspects of diversity.” Upon receiving the award, department chair Steven A. Hauck, II said, “The entire EEPS department is humbled by this award. We look forward to working each day to continue living up to the spirit of the award and expanding inclusion, equity, and diversity in the department and university.”
Among the DEI activities of the department, faculty in the department have co-founded the Women in Science and Engineering Roundtable (WISER) student group, created a local chapter of Teen Science Café in collaboration with John Hay High School, advised the Out in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (oSTEM) student organization, and mentored East Cleveland high school students through the Provost Scholars program.
